Says much of what we have been saying on the loudest supporters' thread.

An interesting article. I'm 50:50 on the whole terrace debate. All seater stadiums do reduce the atmosphere. I tend not to sing if I'm sitting down which is why I prefer standing even in a pub !

However, the other side of me says the lack of football hooliganism inside stadiums is a result of all seater stadiums. The last time it kicked off during a Spurs game inside a stadium was against Cardiff FA cup 3rd round....one of the few grounds in UK with terracing.

I've been at games when it's suddenly erupted and it's not a pleasant experience.

The article made no reference of the crowd trouble which plagues the German league.

Jezza - is there crowd trouble in Germany?? I know there is in Holland and Italy but hadn't heard of much of it in Germany. I'm sure we can make terracing safe with the controls we have in place today. It's bloody difficult getting tickets if you are not a registered member so that, together with clear segregation of fans, should be enough to keep the hooligans at bay. Isn't Park Lane mostly all-standing these days anyway?

Thats opening a can of worms there Jezz. Although the introduction of all seater stadiums may be a small factor, some would even say coincidence, in the decline of football hooliganism inside stadiums, the real reason is more to do with the introduction of CCTV and better / increased policing. Its well known that 'real' hooligans of yesteryear preferred to sit rather than stand and some of the worst hooligan incidents have started in the seats.

Ozspur - as i said, I'm not against terracing, however there is no doubt it is so much easier to police games in all seater stadiums. Those countries with terracing tend to have more crowd trouble inside the ground.

We shouldn't forget what led to Taylor report, nor what it was like trying to watch a game with fights kicking off all round the stadium.

I do prefer standing to sitting but I also prefer safety to trouble. I'm sure you can avoid another Hillsbrough disaster - that aspect of terracing doesn't worry me - it's the crowd disturbances, like those witnessed at Cardiff which is my concern.

Hillsbrough could of also been avoided if the idiots that administered the ground and the police did their jobs properly.

Those of us who were at the same location in 1981 for the SF game against Wolves would know about this. We only avoided a similar disaster than that of the Liverpool v Forest game a few years later by actually scaling the fences, pushing aside the numpty stewards and then unbolting the gates to let the other fans on the pitch.

You could then argue that 'fencing' caused that disaster as well!

By the way, I do miss the terraces!! Great for Atmos!

Stew.
