Tottenham have signed striker Darren Bent from Charlton for £16.5m.

We are delighted to announce the signing of England international striker Darren Bent from Charlton Athletic.

The 23-year-old joins after making 77 appearances for the Valley side in which he scored 37 goals in all competitions during his two-year spell in South London. He began his career as a trainee at Ipswich Town, where he made 141 appearances and scored 55 goals.

The Cambridge-born player won his first England cap against Uruguay in March 2006 at Anfield before doubling his tally at Old Trafford when Greece provided the opposition in August.

Sporting Director Damien Comolli said: “Darren has showed fantastic motivation and desire to join the club and we are absolutely delighted to have him.

“He recognised we have a project here and as a player he wants to work with Martin Jol and showed that all the way.

“The two signings we’ve completed so far in Darren and Gareth Bale offer us massive improvement in terms of the squad, players with great potential whose best days are in front of them.”

Manager Martin Jol commented: “Darren’s strength is his stamina. Normally players will make runs three or four times in 45 minutes, he will do it all the time and if you manage to play balls behind the defence, he will be there. That’s what I like about him.

“He has pace, he links play well and can see a pass - he can exploit the space and play as well.

“He knows Spurs is the place to be and that’s something to be proud of.”

Speaking for the first time as a Spurs player, Darren added: “Tottenham have a lot of young English players and it’s a young squad, it’s a squad going forward and that’s the direction I wanted to take. They seem to be getting better and better every season and I would love to be part of that.

“It helps a lot that I know a few of the lads from England internationals and I’m sure they will help me settle in. It’s exciting times for me and the club, hopefully I’ll show what I can do at Tottenham and we’ll go on to win things.”

The fee is an initial 15.5M + 1M based on contingencies.

I'm still not convinced by this signing at all.

15.5 + 1million add-ons for a bench player...

And I know we'll have a lot of games and need back up in the FA Cup and UEFA (I'm hoping we play a youth, reserve team in the CC) but still can just see Bent taking JD's role and having the same issues....

As for other strikers, Martins is being touted at 13 million, Nugent at 7 million, Comoli could have surely rustled up a young-up-and-coming striker (its his job after all), its a 3rd choice striker we're looking for, there are quite a few around.

Don't get me wrong i'll support Bent and sing my heart out for any player in a Spurs shirt, i'm just concerned with the amount (which despite peoples arguments so far, i'm NOT convinced at all), the problem with rotation and also if this is actually paving the way for berby leaving.

Dannyboy - aren't you forgetting Bent may actually replace Keane. I'm a huge fan of Bent. He has pace, energy, an eye for goal and reasonable height. Plus one other important point - it was obvious Bent was going to return to the premiership. Signing him stops our rivals securing a young, English proven goalscorer.

I tell ya what - I'll stick my neck out and say even with Defoe, Berb and Keane in the squad, Bent will finish up our top scorer next season. You heard it here first !!!!

I reckon you might be on to something Jezza... he's still got a lot to prove, but has excelled at Charlton and Ipswich... with Berba's service this guy could really start racking up some goals. If Lennon can continue to improve his delivery and we finally get a real left winger with a good final ball, Bent could be overwhelmed with the chances - as seen in that Sky article he has a great shots/goals (or was it shots/shots on target) ratio.

Let's give him a go - if he comes good he'll be worth over 20m given his age, great to sign him for six years which is great business sense.
