| Subject: Defoe ? Wed Jun 20 2007, 21:37 | |
| Right, I'm back from vietnam / Cambodia and raring to catch up on Spurs postings.
Let's start a debate - Assuming Bent joins, is it a foregone conclusion Defoe is on his way out or will we start the 07'08 season with the best strike force in the premierleague - Berbatov, Bent, Keane and Defoe ??
I know he only has 2 years left but he hasn't said he wants to leave and I just wonder whether it might be better to allow him to run out his contract rather than secure 8m or so ??
Any thoughts ? |

| Unless we found a similar replacement. Pacey, explosive, powerful right-foot. Otherwise, he must be keep , he still can improve a lot and play better and better as his partner is Berbatov. _________________

| | I would like to think that we'll keep all four. Whether we can keep all four happy is another question entirely, but some good cup runs again would certainly help. |

| My 4 strikers for the coming season would be Berbatov Keane Defoe Barnard
Bent is outragiously over priced (even at 12m let alone 17m) and I do not rate him as a top 4 team striker. If we aspire to be top 4 then we need to buy World class players with proven ability (ref. Berbatov, Keane) or we promote and nurture talent from within. |

| Spot on Eric, saw that Charlton wanted no less than 17mil, what planet is Varney on, what the hell does that make Berby/Keano and Defoe worth. Also, did 17mill's worth of talent keep them in the Premiership.
I don't want to see Defoe go, he played alot of games last season and banged in a fair few, agree in also giving Barnard the nod. |

| Defoe should be sold only after someone like Bent has arrived and A-Nother. Spurs need 4 good strikers for 2007-2008 if we're to compete at all levels and gain a trophy. Defoe is the weakest striker because he's the most selfish striker that we have. He just doesn't cut it.
Having said the above, I don't agree with selling anyone unless he's already been replaced by someone better. We need a bigger squad for the up and coming campaign and that bigger squad also needs to be much better on the first choice 11 than it was last season. To be honest it was Berby that made all the difference last season, but we can't rely on him soley for the next campaign.

| Sounds as though Spurs are giving Defoe an ultimation - sign a new deal or go. Can't afford to see another player run down their contract like Sol Campbell.
Defoe reminds me a little of Collymore in the sense he has potential to deliver so much. He is very selfish - constaintly gets caught offside. He does have a good finish and in fairness he hasn't thrown his rattle out the pram sitting on the bench. |

| its probably why the spurs board are willing to up their bid for Bent... I think Defoe is definitely off, maybe for around £12m to recoup some of the outlay for Bent. 4 top class strikers at spurs is really too good to be true really, although Berbatov, Keane and Bent with an up-n-coming reserve like Pekhart or Barnard is a close second best! |

| | We simply mustn't let Defoe go. It's important we get rid of deadwood such as Murphy, Mido, Gardener and keep those who have done well and are likely to continue doing well. Defoe has nothing wrong, scores plenty of goals and I reckon will link up really well with Bent. Berbs and Keano first choice pairing, Defoe and Bent as excellent back-up when things need changing. |

| Yes but Defoe must first sign a new contract. We can't let him go for nowt or on the cheap 6 months from now.
You are right about him though - despite being lazy he does score his fair share of goals.
You just know if he leaves and plays regularly he'll bang +20 league goals for his new club. |

| | I dont think he'll be playing for us next season unless he's signed a new contract. Personally I'd like him to stay. Yes he's selfish, yes he gets caught off side and yes he can be lazy but he still bangs them in on a regular basis and he does have the sort of quality we need to have depth in the squad |

| news today, inclduing the broadsheets make it look a certainty that Bent is comign and Topspurs editorial has it up, so seems to be a done deal.
I'd like us to keep Defoe, but after the Arsesol debacle, they won't let a Bosman happen, and someone like Redknapp will take him off our hands for most of the Bent outlay. |
