Tottenham are on the brink of clinching the £5million signing of Dutch defender Urby Emanuelson.

The 21-year-old Ajax left-back has been on the Spurs wanted list for weeks but it looks as though a deal can be clinched when the transfer window opens this week. And the Holland international has made it clear to Ajax officials that his heart is now set on a move to White Hart Lane.

Brian Berkleef, Emanuelson's agent, said: "Urby is very keen to join Tottenham. We've told Spurs to discuss the transfer again with Ajax.

"The player wants to go. We know Spurs want him but Ajax are involved in the battle for the Dutch title and they want to get back into the Champions League.

"It will be a hard battle, but the player knows where he wants to go."

The scene is set for Spurs to get their man - if they place a £5m offer on the table for a youngster who's won 10 full caps and was in the Dutch Under-21 team that won the European Championship in 2006.

He was selected at leftback in UEFA's team of the tournament.

In Emanuelson Spurs will get a player with pace and attacking power who, like Gareth Bale, can operate as either a full-back or wide midfielder on the left flank.

New Spurs boss Juande Ramos based his attacking principles at Sevilla on pace down the flanks. He's certainly adding to Tottenham's armoury in this department.

Hope Berba stays.. and Defoe for that matter.

Bring in an accomplished central defender (or two), this dutch bloke, Emanuelson and Gunter and I think we're done. With the exception of defense, I don't think its a good idea to make dramatic changes to the squad at this stage.
